Awards Program

APPLICATION INFORMATION

What We Are Looking For

Through the Napier Awards, Pilgrim Place seeks to nurture leadership by students committed to long-term work for a just, peaceful and sustainable world. With these Awards we are eager to stimulate the integration of sound theory and innovative practice among future leaders.  Applicants must have demonstrated the personal skills for successful leadership, must show a broad knowledge of the background and current state of the particular social frontier they wish to address, and must present a creative proposal for a practical project in which they will be engaged during at least part of their first year following graduation.  The Award is a $10,000 stipend for the implementation of this project. Note that an applicant may pursue study in the year following college, but this student must develop a practical project that will either precede (for example, during the summer following graduation) or accompany the student's graduate coursework.

In this third year of the Napier Awards, we encourage applicants’ creativity in defining their projects and are happy to receive a wide variety of proposals.  We encourage practical, hands-on work which will prepare applicants for leadership in their chosen fields.  It is expected that applicants will have taken the initiative to establish a collaborative relationship with one or more local individuals and/or organizations where the project would be carried out.

The sketches of earlier Napier Fellows suggest the variety of possible project proposals.

Who May Apply
Applicants will be graduating seniors from the five Claremont Colleges who have demonstrated outstanding leadership promise in some aspect of the quest for a just, peaceful and sustainable world.

Selection Process
Each of the colleges will nominate up to three applicants for the Awards. The two Awardees will be chosen from the colleges’ nominees by a selection panel at Pilgrim Place. The selection process will include an interview with each of the nominees.
