During the 2019-2020 academic year, the Pilgrim Place community will offer two $15,000 Napier Awards for Creative Leadership to graduating seniors at the five Claremont Colleges. The Awards were established as a memorial to Davie and Joy Napier, longtime residents of Pilgrim Place, who in earlier years had remarkable careers as prophetic advocates for a just, peaceful and sustainable world.

The Awards will be given to two graduating seniors who demonstrate outstanding leadership promise on social frontiers akin to those addressed by the Napiers. Each of the five colleges will nominate up to three students for the Awards. Two recipients will be chosen from the nominees by a selection panel at Pilgrim Place. Additionally, all students nominated by the schools will be named Napier Fellows and will have the opportunity for a one year mentoring relationship with Pilgrim Place residents having a significant vocational affinity with the nominees.

Following their nomination, the students will meet on several occasions with Pilgrim Place mentors. On March 30, 2019, the nominees will be joined by others at the Colleges and by Pilgrim Place and community members at a reception honoring all the Napier nominees and a festive banquet at which the two Napier Awardees will be publicly announced.

Pilgrim Place is the home of some 350 men and women, many of whom had careers as leaders of a variety of religious and humanitarian organizations in the United States and around the world. Pilgrim Place residents have had long experience in the quest for a just, peaceful, and sustainable world.
